I decided to go immediately to the slums and take care of the Copper Cornet and then went on to Nalia's quest intending to pick up Aerie afterwards and then drop Nalia. But when I went back I can't get the guard to talk to me. The boy was still there and I got the quest, but it just says the guard has nothing to say. Has anyone else run into this and is there a way to still pick up Aerie?? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Once you've gotten the quest I think you can go right into the circus tent. I don't think you need to talk to the guard again.

Unforuntately I tried to just walk past him and couldn't. He takes a defensive posture in the icon and I can't get an arrow to take me inside. I assume I have to get his permission to deal with the evil before I can go inside the tent.

That's very strange. You might want to travel a little south of the tent and talk to the guy on the platform. I think he used to be the animal trainer or something. He can tell you what happened in the circus tent. I spoke to him first and then talked to the guard and the guard let me in. I didn't speak to the boy until after I had completed the tent. Sorry I didn't remember this earlier.
