If you are new to playing spell casters, be a wizard.... If you are confident in what spell you think you will need to beat the game, be a sorcerer.

Wizards can learn any spell, but they have to first get the scroll for it. They also have to memorize spells, so they are not as flexible as sorcerers. However you can employ a larger variety of tactics because you can learn any spell you find.

Sorcerers have to pick spells as they level up, gaining them like abilities. They have a limit on how many spells of a certain level they can cast a day, and while this is more than what a wizard could do, they are limited to a few spells a level (5 for most). They are harder to play if you don't yet know the game, and the magic system, so they are really a class more for the people playing a 2cd of 3rd time... Or just the cronic restarters who learn alot in what they play of the game ;)

Sorcerers are the more powerful of the two. I would suggest going through as a mage first. Sorcerers have little room for error when selecting spells. Once you pick it, it's yours. Mages can scribe more spells and they are better suited for beginners. Once you get a grasp on the spells and various uses, then I would suggest trying a sorcerer. A mage is far more flexible- you can plan ahead for each seperate battle. A sorcerer is more rigid because he cant get many spells. My advice is a specialist mage- particularly a counjerer because their opposite school is divination which is rubbish.

I wouldn't say that divination was rubbish. They have two really useful spells.....identify and most importantly true sight. There might not be many spells that fall under this school, but those that do are certainly useful.
