I downloaded the editor but I can't unzip it. It keeps telling me it is not a proper application. Am I doing something wrong?

Sounds like you might not have WinZip installed, which you'd need to unzip it. You can also get a free extractor over here which should resolve the issue:

I also found that I needed to save the zip file to the hard drive in order to extract from it, since simply opening the file without saving it first won't work apparently. Also, be careful that you're downloading the version of the editor made to run on your particular operating system.

Edit: Just tried downloading the newest version, and it seems that you also need to download and extract some dll files to the same folder as the editor in order to get it to work. The dll files are available from the same page as the editor itself.

OK I have the dll file zipped and on my hard drive on the desktop as well as both vertions of the editor, one for XP which I have and the one. I get a response with the other one that it is looking for the dll files, but the xp won't even go that far. I have an evaluated version of winzip that works fine for anything else. Do I need to have the zipped files in the wizardry8 folder?
I was trying to figure out what I did to turn the faction aginst me and was paying attention to all the messages but I couldn't catch it. The first game I played I had a battle at the space port and I ran in to do battle with the goast trynnig and lt. Horn outside. They joined the battle and I killed them but that did not effect my faction rating with the rest of the city. Anton still traded with me. Anywhere else I do battle with those two it turns most people aginst me. It certainly makes it interesting to feel like an outsider.

With the zipped files for both the editor and the dll files, open both with winzip and then extract them to the desktop (there's an extract button in winzip that you can press as soon as you have the zip file open which will automatically extract all the necessary files). Hopefully this will do the trick for you!

As far as the faction issue is concerned, I think we're all going to have to wait for the next version of the mod until this is under control. It seems to be an issue for the majority of people playing it.

If your file structure is NTFS, then Windows XP automatically treats zip files as directories. You don't need another zip extractor. If you are running a FAT-32 file structure, you need a zip extractor/creator such as 7-zip, which is one of many free zip programs.

You can convert from FAT-32 to NTFS on the fly, but you can't go back. NTFS uses space much more efficiently, and handles larger drives. It also has more features.

why do you need an editor anyway this game is great without it.
i am on my 7th time round and have never used an editor

The editor is being used to create game mods, including the creation of new monsters, and for those playing these mods, the editor can be used to fix potential bugs. It's also possible to customise certain game elements to suit your own style of gameplay. While we all agree that the original game is excellent on its own, many of us have played the game closer to 30+ times and appreciate the potential for new surprises that game modification can provide, particularly in light of the fact that the possibility for a new sequel to the game is unfortunately looking quite bleak now.
