How do I get the hidden alcove with the key for the safe open? I've search the board enough to know the key is in the alcove but I just cannot get it open.

As I vaguely recall, you walk around behind the statue, look up and touch the skull it's holding. Do this from behind the statue, otherwise you set off a trap.

Yes, click on the skull the statue is holding, clicking anywhere else makes the floor in front of it drop open.
