You know, the stupid (pretty hard) bug that you face in the early part of the game. He is tough, don't get me wrong but... I'm not sure if anyone has found a different way of beatting him... (SPOILER ALERT)

I you take the "elevator"/"metal bridge" up to the top floor of the Lower Monestary, you can (basically) sneak up on Gregor. However, my method of beating him is a little more devious.

When you confront him and the battle begins, put everyone on defense except your Ranger or Fighter. Have your ranger ready his bow or your fighter wield his weapon. Now this is very important: Choose the "walking" button (like you are going to flee); Gregor will go first and approach; when you turn comes to walk, cancel it and allow that one person to attack Gregor; this will piss him off.

Next round, (put EVERYONE on defense) choose walk; Gregor will try to hurt someone (hopefully not to bad); when your turn comes, TAKE OFF; walk as far as you can towards the Metal Bridge. Every round you get, select walk, and continue to walk towards the Metal Bridge.

Gregor is so pissed that he will "charge" you everytime (setting him up for a trap). Once you reach the Metal Bridge, (DON"T GO ON IT) head towards Burz (there is another path which leads towards Burz). Again, every round select walk and walk towards Burz. Gregor will continue to follow.

Once you get close to Burz, a message will pop up "Burz Defends" (during a round). Once this happends, the next round select RUN. When Gregor charges, RUN LIKE THE WIND. When you see Burz, run behind him. Gregor will try to persue. If you do it right (and with a little luck) none of your players will get hurt, and you won't really have to fight.

In fact, the next round Burz will charge Gregor. Because he does, Gregor won't be able to get around him (in order to get to you). Burz will end up defeating Gregor for you. You can either sit and watch or help Burz attack (but make it from long range). In the end, you get to avoid the pretty tough boss, and probably not have a scratch on you as well.

This took me a while to think of but I do it everytime I start a new game. If anyone else has tried this or wants to, just let me know how it goes.

Brave, brave, brave sir Robin...

I had tried this in an early game (before i started to play ironman). Usual result was get my party killed, since Gregor seems to move slightly farther than my characters. When i finally suceeded to reach Burz, Gregor killed Burz.

Maybe thats only in expert, and Burz is stronger in normal. But then, who would need him in normal... Gregor nowaday rarely kills one of my party members, and never killed more than 2, in expert ironman.

I like the excitment and danger of facing Gregor in Expert IM games. I am not as skilled as Wereboar and sometimes my party dies, but there is a thrill of danger in it, and I am getting better at managing the battle, using the pinprick Spells and physically weak characters I usually have at that point in the game.

Allstargoaly, there is no shame in running in this game and your method is clever. Running is also a very good skill to practice in the Monestary, because you will need to use it strategically, many times, over the course of the game.

Gregor is fun, but all is fair!

I just took him out with my three Lvl 2 rogues. I used the haste scroll (fizzled) the cherry bomb and the 2 N. Fumes bombs I had. One managed to knock him out for a round which probably made the biggest difference.

I just became Drizzt!!!!! Hurray!!

I fought him only once, and killed him with ease. Normal though. the punch line was my rogue that kiled him with a sling, doing 2 damage. No one got killed. My tactics was to simply kick him. party was-priest d, mage f,thief h, samurai h lord (dr) and archer h.

I usually fight Gregor with a Lvl 4 Party. Casted 'Missile Shield' (protection against his shooting) and 'Enchanted Blade' , used 'Haste' scroll. I often had luck with 'Paralyze' or 'Web'. So most of my games my fighter could easily chop him to pieces.
If I got problems I sometimes use a Body of Stone Potion or the Cracker Stix I
bought from Burz, together with the spells of my alchemist and mage.

Wereboar 09-22-2003 11:18 AM

I usually wait for level 4 before i fight him. With a few parties that i considered weak, i waited until level 5 (but a five spellcaster party isn't as weak as i thought).

I always visit Burz first, to buy some healing potions. And a granite potion, if i have a fighter type designed to stand in front.

And just some games ago, i realized how vulnerable Gregor is to the flash of light (or however that low level alchemist spell is called)

Yes, the Level 2, Blinding Flash Spell is effective about... 60% of the time. It is tricky to manage the timing of it, because Gregor always runs.

This can be used as an opportunity to get away clean, back to Burz, if things are going poorly, but Gregor will be close to full strength when you return if you do that (fast natural recovery).

A couple games I chased him when he ran, which was always a mistake. Done right you can attack him as he runs, and as he returns. He runs farther per turn when he is running toward the party, rather than away. If he runs twice, before returning, he will almost reach the party in the next charge. One nice thing about the "pinprick" spells (Energy Blast, Frost, Acid Splash, Make Wounds and Mind Stab) is that you will keep the mana and not cast it unless you can reach and damage him with it. It can fizzle if cast in the yellow, orange or red, but will always hit if cast successfully.

We beat the Khafka spawn once at lev 2, had some some luck as the monk knocked him out for a round or two. The party was Nin, Sam, Mon and Bis (a martial arts party which did pretty well, made it to Arnika while still lev 2). Had the only deaths of the game in that fight (2). Those are the battles you remember.

A few days ago we beat him at lev 3 with a 6 party. First try. No deaths. (Lor, Rog, Bar, Pri, Psi and Mag). Other times even at lev 4 he is hard. I play at normal. It seems that formation and luck also help as much as what you throw at him.
