Tough monster - any suggestions on how to overcome her?
Magic seems ineffective against her and I am considering getting out of the water in order to get more levels elsewhere.

My winning combination was : Classic "Keep all of your buff spells up" (magic screen, armorplate, ench. weap., missile shield), cast elemental shield & soulshield , haste , personal buffs like superman ... and ... well ... just pound on it As far as other spells go : Nessy can be affected by Armormelt. Good luck.

My characters were doing very little damage and the combat was taking forever until I finally got around to casting Superman. Superman is what turned the tide for me.

My stratagey was to start combat pretty far away from her and gain surprise on her. Then in the free round I would cast one spell at her to make sure she'd notice me and fight, I use sonic boom when I use this kind of tactic.

I would also summon a bunch of elemetals - cast it if you can, if not Crock sells canned elemental potions. Also putting up some buff spells like element shield, soul shield and eye for an eye are good.

In the next round I would get closer to her but not within melee range and try to stand in an opening in between the elementals I had summoned. Would cast one spell at her for sure, armormelt. Might also want to cast haste and bless at this point as it will effect your party and the elementals.

Then hang back, heal as needed, pepper her with ranged weapons and watch your elementals whack her too. She's pretty easy to beat this way.

if your Magic Screen, Soul Shield and Element Shield are up to it, you can let her knock herself out casting and go pulverize her unconscious bulk FROM BEHIND!

Save before entering shallows! You really want excallibur: a more valuable weapon for me than CofC.

Descend to Nessie, run to right, if she engages you, keep running. Get to Davy Jones Locker, check for excalibur, reload if necessary.

Don't engage until excal is yours, then save again.

Engage Nessie [don't let her engage you!] from a distance, and if possible step behind a rock [without getting so much cover that combat ends] and cast all buffs, as well as haste body of stone and superman. Use potions if you must.

ELEMENT SHEILD IS CRUCIAL!! Softens her earthquake attack.

Have several characters throw canned elementals, or summon them. They do good damage and serve to distract her attention.

I only rarely get by her without at least one death...

Well, if this is all about getting Excal, i've gotten that far, and on to Bayjin without killing Nessie. 100 Stealth and Chameleon, i don't really know if either helped, but she often doesn't notice me until i'm going up the gas bubbles into Bayjin Shallows. When she notices me, i run up the tunnel toward BS, she can't reach you if you're even just a little way in there. Sometimes she Earthquakes someone, not good for Iron Mode...
