I've been playing the game a lot, but still I've been wondering about the following :
1) Do your spell skills rise faster when casting ex. 10 powerlvl 1 spells then ex. 5 powerlvl 2 spells (ex. knock knock). Or is it best always to cast the spells at the highest lvl possible (even going into the red powerlvls) 2)Is anybody using "sprismic ray" spell - I've never gotten anything good out of it. 3) what about all the "insta kill" spells - anybody using them - whenever I've used them they never seem to work. I had a mage who cast asphyxiation, and a priest who cast death wish. After the two spells had been cast, about 70-80% of the enemies were "gone"

I've only cast the insta-kills with my gadgie, and very occassionally used quicksand with my bishop. Asphyxiation is really cool, and I've had pretty good luck with it.
Prismic Ray, once again, only with my gadgeteer, but as I got cooler gadgets made, I got rid of the strobe light, cuz it sucks, IMHO. |
I don't know which enemies you kill with death wish or aspy.. but I hate that spells. My bishop at lvl 25, PC 90, and all realms > 90 on expert can kill noxious slimes with that spells but if the enemies are little harder, it has no use. You can kill perhaps 10-20 % if you are luckyIf you really want to use that spells that I would take death wish, I have more luck with that than with aspy...

Niob -- for some reason those 'insta-kill' spells seem to work better when 'cast' via a gadget or instrument than when cast as a normal spell by a spellcaster. I know I do a lot more damage with my bard 'casting' a Lvl 7 Banish via the imported Cornu of Demonspawn than I do with my bishop (with a powercast of 80+ and a theology and divine ranking over 100 each) casting the same Lvl 7 Banish.
Same thing happens with other condition-causing spells -- paralyze and hex works better off an ammo or weapon than they do as a spell. I figure there must be some difference in the way the percentages are calculated from one type to the other. |
It pays to check the enemy's resistances, too. As soon as you have Mythology high enough, right-clicking on the enemy has a lot more info. High air resistance makes Asphyxiate less likely to succeed, etc. I've made a lot of stuff go away with Quicksand, Death Wish and Death Cloud.
I think gadgets and instruments succeed more because enemy resistance isn't factored into the odds. Caster level vs enemy level is also important. |

I've been experimenting with knock knock since I started this thread. And it looks like the realmspower goes faster up with many powerlvl 1 that fewer highpowered. But the wizardry goes VERY slowly up this way. I tested for about 2 hours with a 4 bishop team (in the vault).
