north of him. I found a path thru the mountains that leads to the Mines and I scouted that sea/river at the top of the Swamp east and west. Do I have to do the sea caves first from the Umpani base?

You can go through the north Swamp exit through a tunnel to Bayjin and go into the Bayjin Shallows map from there, which connects with the same underwater tunnel map you reach from Mt. Gigas; from that map you can reach (with just a bit of difficulty...heh) the Sea Caves. Faster to go from from Mt. Gigas, but probably worth going at least partway through Bayjin for all the experience.

The swamp entrance to Bayjin is guarded by a couple groups of Rynjin. This is near the abandoned huts in the north. It's also much faster than swimming through the tunnels from Mt. Gigas. Note that you can go through the swamp, even if you have signed up with the Umpani.
