i am curious about that. does charming make a difference when you pickpocket an npc?

Nope. But it will help after the NPC has caught you pickpocketing.

Charming is pretty useless except for skill training......
Well the fact is that you can use charm to make a neutral (i.e.not hostile) npc to be friendly before you close the conversation box again. But when you talk to them again (new talking box) they will still be neutral. The only real solution is to give them compensation.
