i'm using an alchemist for the first time, but i'm not sure how they create potions. do i just take two different potions and merge them? if that is the case, then what about when my party is camping? so far, my alchy has created two potions while camping. what triggers that? he surely doesn't seem to do it every time. so what conditions need to be present for him to make some?

i've heard lots of debates over that.

i think the consensus is that her overall alchemy skill determines the type of stuff she makes and how often she makes it. however, there is a lot of variation in how often.

and you merge items pretty much the way you say.
pick up an item, hit merge and try to combine it with another item.
if you get:
~~these items cannot be merged:
forget it. it will never work.
~~your char cannot combine this at this time:
come back later. usually every 5 points in alchemy skill will open up another type of combination.

Right. The potions made while camping come out of thin air, so to speak.

Keep in mind, by the way, that ANY character with alchemy skill can make potions, so long as their skill is high enough. So Ninjas, Rangers, and Bishops are able to merge potions.

Oh, and doing that eventually raises the alchemy skill.

Swavek the way an alchemist makes potions is random on when it happens. What you make dpeneds on your skill (the more skill the more chance you will make something better than you previously could). It requires no components. (that is why i think it is random on when they actually make them otherwise you would be makin soemthing everytime you had the components which i walk around with components i dont want to combine all the time).

For the Merge'ing of potions. Not only an alchemist but rangers,ninja's & bishop's can also merge potions because they have the Alchemy Realm skill although they cannot make potions while camping like an alchemist can.
