I have the key to get the staff in the rift, but it don't work (yet).
The only way I can even get it to show when using "use item" is to equip it.

Have tried dismissing NPCs. Seems I need something else as well, but ***I*** can't figure out what it might be.

Any help would be muchly appriciated.

Try this: enter your inventory, take the "key" (I think it was a wand or a staff) and leave the inventory while holding the key... than klick on the "door" with it....

(if I remember correctly)
