Depends one your team. A fihter will be pleased with the sword.

No question about it: light sword for me.

The shield is nice, but no one in my parties these days uses a shield. Kinda makes it useless ;)

Mystic Ray: Whazzat? Haven't come across this in any of my games so far.

Frontier Phaser: Ho hum. Doesn't that need modern weapon skill and power packs? I never bother with modern weapons except for gadgeteers, and they alrady have their omnigun and other goodies.

Depending on my party it would be either the shield or the sword.

If i had a char in a group that uses a shield i'd say shield over sword easily. Shield has nice resists which is needed towards end game where as the sword just makes it way easier in battles & fights dont usually last longer than 3 or 4 rounds for me anyways so cutting a battle down to 2 rounds wont make much difference.

If i had no chars using shields then definently sword.

I also got a priest who in a few levels i will turn into a fighter, i have been grooming him since level 5 pumping up his sword skill close combat and shield.
so he will need a shield
and 90 vs fire and i think water is good

Well, I can tell you what I did in Wiz 7 when I had the choice of the pistol, the sword or the shield: I picked the shield.

Given the same option here, I'd go with the shield and here's my reasoning:

1) There are lots of good swords in the game, even if you miss out on Excaliber and the Light Sword as well. There are not so many good shields and most of them are quite heavy. Here's a fantastic shield that is very light too.

2) The pistol requires ammo (or it should -- I've heard some people say it actually doesn't) as well as Modern Weapon skill and it's a lot easier to build up bow or sling skill than it is MW unless you are a gadgeteer, in which case you don't even NEED the pistol.

3) Mystic Ray is only good against Savant androids, AFAIK (not having imported it from 7) so it's relatively useless.

4) I like the neat sound the shield makes when an opponent hits it. ;)

Fortunately, however, I don't have to make the choice since with a little luck and time I can get several light swords as well as a couple of light shields. :D

Where do I find these items?
I've found a frontier phaser in Bayjin. But my best swords are still the ivory blade, bushido blade fang and bloodlust. Do I have to wait until ascension peak to get an excalibur?

I also found a zatoichi bo and I think that was a a mistake. In Wiz 7 one could always enforce an excalibur in a random chest of high quality items.

BTW How Do I get into the treasury room in the Rapax Castle and what is the secret way from the jail to the main level of the castle good for?
