question for the faithful:

Using an archer PC with Minsc, Anomen, Nalia, Jaheira and Aerie. Thinking about dumping Aerie for Haer Dalis. I think I've read posts regarding bards being able to cast some magic. How limited are they?
I recall that they can only get up to a certain level in spells, but long-term I plan on keeping both Nalia and Imoen if that's the case.

Aerie has a lot of spells at her disposal but I find I only use a few of them... Jaheira is much more valuable to me at present as a 3rd tank, since my main character is exclusively a ranged fighter. I figure if Haer Dalis can cast a few mage spells, and Jahiera can cast a few cleric/druid spells, do I really need Aerie (who has proved to be a liability).

Granted, Minsc has taken Aerie for his witch, but I plan on dumping him for Keldorn anyway.... so the party would then be my Archer, Keldorn, Anomen, Nalia, Jaheira and Haer Dalis (who I'd then dump for Imoen).

Any thoughts?

I am not to sure what you think of this. I would take Edwin for a primary mage in your party he is far one of the better mage. Some people have trouble getting past the fact he is evil. But he is such a powerful Mage.
And Jaheria as a thrid tank I tried that but she is not really that good of a tank. She is more in the background casting spells. But give it a try with her you might have better luck.
I would dump Haer for Edwin and when you get Imoen back dump Nalia and pick up a tank. Maybe Mazzy?

Edwin is certainly better than Haer. I thought Haer was worthless so I didn't play with him long enough to have a good feeling for him. I like Aerie as a backup in the party. I use Imoen and Nalia and Aerie is either my main cleric or I get rid of Jaheira, grab Anomen and he becomes a 3rd tank and clerical backup to Aerie. It's nice to have two mages, two clerics, and 3 tanks.

It would...if only we could play with 7 characters! ;)...No, i get your drift...but i must say, if youre playing for the umpteenth time, Haer'Dalis can be quite fun with his comments, and give him a good bow and stuff him full of Magic Missiles...well, its not a total loss, thats for sure....

It doesn't matter if Minsc has taken her as his witch. You can still get rid of Aerie and he won't mind.

You certainly don't need Aerie's cleric spells since you've got Anomen and Jaheira. And Haer'dalis is a better meleer than Aerie. But if you're going to dump Haer'dalis for Imoen anyway there might not be much point in getting Haer'dalis just for that short time. I mean, for the quest to get him you need to be pretty experienced, so you can't get him straight away, so maybe you'd be better just keeping Aerie until you get Imoen back.

I dislike Edwin not because of his alignment, but because of his moderate WIS and pitiful DEX. So he can memorize 2 more spells per level than Imoen can, so what? He's not going to be casting ANY spells while you're dragging him to a temple for a resurrection. Speaking of Imoen, does Nalia have ANYTHING that Imoen doesn't? And what about Jan? I like Jan, he got style.

About Aerie: I find that multiclassed characters serve well as a 'backup' whatever they are. Aerie would go well with a pure Mage and pure Priest, but if you want Anomen, time to dump the elf and get Jan or Haer'Dalis as backup Mage. I have no idea if Bards have a 'ceiling' to their spells.

Has anyone ever seen an elf WITH wings?

Bards can cast up to up sixth level spells.

I personally like Aerie as my main mage...But im more of a tank-type person (my party was fighter, Minsc, Aerie, Anomen, Imoen, and Valygar).

I wouldnt take Haer' If my party depended on it for surivival (i hate him that much...its his picture i do believe ;) )
Never had Edwin, I have had Keldorn and Korgan; The only reason Keldorn is good is cause he can wield Carsomyr, but Korgan is more my type of guy (want an axe up your..um...yea).

Its all up to you though, whatever you have fun with, thats what counts :D

I used Haer Dalis (everyone gasps!!!!)

He was a great Tank(ditto)

He used Celestial Fury in his off hand, melfs minute meteors in the other. Cast stone skin protecion from magical NRG(energy) etc...
And then goes up realy close to an enemy. Uses Blade spin(or whatever it's called)and did over 50 Damage a round!!!!!

I think that Haer Dalis is great(everyone gasps again!!!)And that anyone who finds him crap just didn't know how to use him!!!

sixofspades, if you give the gauntlets of dexterity to edwin, he becomes quite formidable. he will have a good ac, if given appropriate equipment. just my two gold pieces however.besides, who needs a good ac with stoneskin, mislead, etc.?
