I recently reformatted my HDD and put Win2K on there (WinME was nerve wracking). I reinstalled W8 and my savegames, and they seem to load fine, but now my mouse moves around like there's a strobe light on and the game is much slower.
I'm sure it's from Win2K's memory management. 128MB worked fine on Millenium, but I know that's a bit light for 2K, I've scrounged up another 96MB here at work that I'll put in till I can go get some bigger memory modules. My question is, for those of you on WinNT or Win2K, Can you tell me how much RAM you have and What video card you use? I have 128MB and an nVidia TNT 32MB video card. Others with similar problems, I'd be happy to hear from as well |
Ok, I run Wiz 8 under Win 2k SP1. I have an Asus v6600 32 Mb Gforce card and 512 Mb RAM and Wiz plays flawlessy, often while multitasking to death (IRC, Usenet, and various other d/l happening, as well as Outlook Express and several IEs) I have a lowly PIII 733 and ASUS motherboard, and ATA 100 drives. NOW! the funny thing is this, my mate just built a P4 machine. 1.8 Ghz, 256 RAMBUS and an Asus v7700 GForce II gfx card (win 2k sp?) He told me that he went back to 98 dual boot) as WIz played like rubbish on his machine. He reckons it was the video driver, I am not so sure. I love Wiz so much that if I had not played it twice, I would install 98 (dualboot though) just to play it! Needless to say, 98 would get the flick IMMEDIATELY I was done with Wiz. Let's just say that I am damn glad I don't have to put up with 98 and its problems and that Wiz runs wonderfully on my machine under 2k.

What ended up happening.... the extra 96MB didn't make a single difference, but on ME, I only had the choice of Software(mmx) and OpenGL, so I used OpenGL. Now on 2000, for some reason it gives me the DirectX7 option. I selected that and put it on 800x600 (It was blurry on 640x480), and it runs great now.
of all the experience I've had here at work troubleshooting 2000, I find that it's almost never the driver's fault. Win2K, I have to say, does a great job with compatibility. The other MS platforms needed a lot of help in that, but I'll have to break down and admit that Microsoft finally did something right. The extra memory probably wouldn't hurt though... it's sped up my Nox quite a bit. It's a neat little game... ebay'd it for $2 |
Indeed the extra memory doesn't hurt. I'm also running Wiz8 on W2k, CPU=Athlon 700, RAM=256MB, video=GeForce2MX 64MB. I usually multi-task with Outlook Express, IE and Excel (for my Alchemy mixing list) :) All this goes fairly smooth, but when taking a look at the memory usage in Task Manager, Wiz8 is usually using around 140MB of virtual memory. This means that with only 128MB RAM W2k would need to do a lot of swapping.
Oh yes, I'm running the game with DirectX7 at 1024x768x32. |
I'm running fine in OpenGL at 1024x786... then again i'm running a 1050Mhz processor (well it's underclocked... it's really a xp 1700+) Asus 8200 Geforce 3 ti 200 wiht 327 megs of RAM. oh yaah an win2k... I refuse to use anything BUT win2k
