I was just examining some of my characters, and I noticed that my mage somehow has 4 points in Alchemy! It says this skill is closed to my character, and I cannot add more points to it. I didn't mix any potions or anything; I wonder how my Mage learned Alchemy! He's been a Mage his whole life.

I'd guess perhaps you've equipped something that gives an Alchemy bonus?

Some spells are dual-indexed to two books--for instance, a mage and alchemist can both learn them. Sounds like a bit of a bug if it's giving your mage alchemy points instead of mage points for the spell in question.
