I am sooo sick of myself for re-starting endlessly. I’ve committed myself to playing all the way through with one party, keeping stats and records as I go, so I can get a handle on what’s working and what’s not. I thought since I’m doing the work for my benefit, I’d go ahead and post it for anyone who might be interested. I make no claims to be an expert, have the perfect party, or the best way to develop my characters. I have a pretty good idea of what’s required in the early game (up through Trynton), and some ideas of how I want to build my characters.

I know that I’m always interested in HOW people build their parties, and I don’t see much info posted on that. So hopefully, anyone who cares to can follow along, and learn from my successes and my mistakes.

WARNING: There will be some very mild spoilerish info as I go, as special weapons and items will be listed, and I might make comments about how the party did against certain encounters.

LEVEL 2...Aren't they cuuute?
Our little band is feeling pretty cocky now, they've been beating hell out of roaches and baby slimes..."this adventuring stuff ain't so tough!" I've actually been surprised that Yoko and Gizmo have been holding their own in terms of kill ratio, especially Gizmo with that pathetic little pop-gun of his. If anyone's wondering why I bumped DEX on my priest, I decided I don't want anyone to have a speed less than 60. I think speed is a more important factor than people give it credit for, and the whole party is tied to the movement rate of it's slowest member. So, here's the level 2 stats.

3rd LEVEL

DAY 2, 15:11, LOWER MONASTARY
Well, they’ve cleared the 1st part of the lower level, ready to head up the stairs. Kills are balancing nicely, with
Starhawk staring to get her share. On stats, going to keep pumping STR and DEX for Taz, DEX and SEN for Yoko (for those all important criticals), INT and DEX for Aria and Gizmo, PIE and DEX for Bernard, and INT and PIE for Starhawk. As you can see, I’m a big dexterity fan. On my Priest and Mage, I told myself to save their spell picks, but couldn’t make myself do it. I’m too much an instant gratification kind of guy.

4th LEVEL

I said hi for everyone to Gregor, he sends his regrets, he’s not feeling to well right now. :D I made a slight shift in strategy for Bernard, I’m leaving his DEX at 50, and pumping up SPD for awhile. I want his spells popping off a little sooner in the melee round. And I’m getting worried about Starhawk’s hit point situation. She’s going to be running into a bunch of baddies that can hit her with missile fire, and 13 hp’s at 4th level is ridiculously weak . I might have to burn a Priest spell on Guardian Angel before I hit the roads.

wow Merkin....where do you find the time to play the game with a post so detailed as this :).....but keep it up. Your character choice may just influence my next party :)
I still have my first party in tact and have made it back to the upper monestry after Arnika.
I am beginning to see the weaknesses in a couple of my character choises...my Bard is having a tough time justifying her inclusion (piercing pipes just aint got the kick that it had earlier) but I just love her blond hair and her southern accent LOL
My Valkerie is also a bit disapointing....she is not using her pole weapon properly at the moment...though she is managing two hits sometimes now.
Its prob all my fault for not allocating points properly...but who cares...if I have to start all over GREAT.....it will just extend the time this game remains on my hard drive. :D

5th LEVEL
Day 3, 18:10, Lower Monastery
Cleared the lower Monastery and everyone bumped another level. Now it gets a little more fun, (I really HATE rabid rats)

Thoughts on the party thus far:
Taz is kicking butt, frequently hitting for 40+ points. Fighters are simple to develop, I just keep dumping everything into STR, DEX, Sword, Bow, and Close Combat. He’s doing just what he’s supposed to.

Yoko hits a LOT, but not for a whole lot of damage. Still, I think she’ll come along. Continuing to put everything into DEX, SEN, Sword, Dual Weapon, and Close Combat. I think once SEN is up to 60, I’ll start putting points into speed (I want those multiple attacks with 2 weapons).

Aria isn’t killing much yet, but putting everything to sleep has made the party’s job MUCH easier. I just flat love Bards, even though they’re not that impressive to start. Everything continues to go into INT, DEX, Music, Pickpocket, with the remainder split between Sword and Bow.

Gizmo, well, he’s got the best weapons score in the bunch, does nothing but shoot that pop-gun all day long. (Even if it IS a MK 3 now, it still sucks). I’ve never played a Gadgeteer before, but I want to play with the toys, so I keep him. Just pumping everything into INT, DEX, Modern Weapons, Locks, and Engineering.

Bernard, now that he has Web, Armorplate, and Identify is much more useful. Next, He start getting cure spells. And Make Wounds is starting to pack a puch. I changed my mind again on his development, I’m going to Keep putting points into PIE and DEX until his DEX hits 60, then I’ll re-think. His skills all go into magic, and I’m trying to keep it spread among the realms.

Starhawk still scares me with her ultra-low HP, but I don’t want to put any points into VIT until I’ve maxed her INT (should happen at level 9). Of her spells, I’m most disappointed with Noxious Fumes. The manual states it’s a duration spell (3.5 dam/lev, 1 round/lev) It’s not. Even a 3rd level fume is dissipating in one round. I should have gone with the good old trusty fireball. (Why is it, BTW, that almost EVERY RPG gives your mage a fireball at 5th level? Is there some kind of law?) Energy Blast is her killer spell right now, and having two casters with Web is incredibly useful. All points continue into INT, PIE, Wizardry, and the various magic realms.

I’ve noticed I really miss having a Ranger, mainly for the high Mythology. I hadn’t realized how much I planned my battles around knowing how many hp’s each creature had left. At this point, a Ranger would have been more useful than the Gadgeteer. On the other hand, I know that Gizmo will get some cool toys down the line, and having him learn locks frees up Aria to develop a bit of melee skills. On the balance, I’d have to say I’m pretty happy with how the party’s shaping up at level 5.

Best line so far: My Bard, in her southern accent, after being badly wounded..."This hurts worse than when they tell you they still love their wives" :D

You may want to consider pumping your Gadgeteer's Senses. I regret not doing this in my game as Senses opens up the all important skill of Eagle Eye.

I do like your post but I wonder how you can devote time to playing and keep such detailed notes. Keep up the good work.
