Obviously a level 11 Mage will only be able to wear robes and have a limited weapon choice. But what of a Mage-Samurai 10-1 ? He can cast Mage spells and still have access to the Samurai's arsenal right ? So instead og going pure Mage isn't it a better idea to go for Samurai for one level then switch to mage. One basically ends up with a pure Mage, with armor and learning to use Swords by practicing...
Please feel free to comment, as I do not have the game yet, I would like to be corrected if I am totally beside the point

I would actually go the other way. Start as a mage for the first five levels, then switch to samurai. Samurais don't get spells until level five.

The reason for this is that a class can't improve in a skill that isn't normally available to it. Therefore, your mage could not improve in Swords or Critical strike. With first level numbers in these skills, your mage wouldn't be very useful with a sword, and would get very few critical strikes. However, a samurai can improve in all of the magical categories that a mage gets. I think that the magic growth would be slower than a true mage.

As far as armor, there is no armor skill (other than shield), so I don't think a samurai switched to mage would be able to wear samurai armor.

I do not believe a Mage who used to be a Samauri can wield swords or wear Samauri armor....
