I think you can

Or go into the BG folder and take out the one called Save
then uninstall/reinstall and put it back in the new installation

When you uninstall BG, the saved games are still on the computer. Only if you delete the 'Black Isle' folder in your C drive (program files) will you lose them.

Hi, found this thread on the search engine and it relates to my problem. I think I've read about this before so it must be fairly common.

Just went to play SoA and for maybe the third or fourth time when start up a game instead of "Play" my option is "Install" and clicking that won't do anything. So my only choice is to unintall the game and then reinstall it playing musical discs for ten minutes.

I made backups of everything in the two save folders, the portraits folder, the character folder and the override folder. (0ver 7megs!)

But what I want to know is why this happens? Why does BGIISoA just sometimes decide it's not installed enough to play, but too installed to uninstall?

Does that last line make sense?

I played with this problem for quite some time.I know on my system my Norton Utilities(windoctor) would mes up my BG SOA windows path every time I ran it.My norton Windows Registry fixer upper program would tell me about an invalid path and ask if I would want to fix it.Ofcourse I would say yes and all of a sudden my SOA would ask me to install.Yet everything was right there on my hard drive.I still run my norton,I just don,t have it fix that preticular error.Works just fine.No more re-installing 4x a week.I don,t know if that would be your problem as well.If you do have any of these programs turn them off and run them manualy when you need to.They eat alot of precious gaming mem and don,t always get along well with the operating system.Too many programs trying to be the boss can really slow down a system. :D

I do run a program called RegCleaner from time to time. I guess for some reason it finds a key worth deleting that SoA needs to run? I'll try not using it for awhile.

Thanks!

Ningauble,

A Van City person, Cheers and Welcome!

The registry application is the problem. When the app runs it checks for a local key and does not see it so assumes that you have yet to install the product. You should be able to run one of the executable's in the BG folder that will start the game without that splash screen but I have no idea what it is.

Happy slaughter, and keep you purse close at your side, or it will be mine.

Huma, your exact problem and solution are what i finally had to use to play the game without re-installing every time i wanted to play after i ran Norton Windocter...I just dont fix anything that has the words "BG2" or "Diablo2" in it :D (They run off similar files and who knows if you fix one the other mite not work ;) )

Happy Gaming!
