I just noticed that my thief is unable to operate a light crossbow. The item has that red can't-use glow, and when I attempt to place it in the weapon slot, the game says that I "Can not use item". It's not a heavy crossbow, the description says nothing about thieves being unable to use it and I'm not wearing a shield.
Yes, I have both the official patch and the unofficial fixpack. |
Does it have an attribute requirement? Some weapons require a minimum statistic i think. Maybe a strength requirement that your thief doesn't meet?
|
Strength Requirements come into play in BG2--the requirement for a Light Crossbow is 8 Strength. This rule would come into play in BG1 if you're playing Tutu, but I think the message would be "Inadequate Strength," not "Cannot use item."
You're not a Cleric/Thief, are you? Is this the only Crossbow that you're not allowed to use? |
No Tutu.
And I am a pureclassed level 1 human thief. I have yet to experiment with other crossbows. I'll tell when I find some. |
That is because thieves cannot use light crossbows.

Iron Greasel, try CLUAing all the Light Crossbows in the game to your Thief, and make a note of which one(s) are flagged against pureclass Thieves. |

you should never eat mushrooms you find in the wild, Echon. ;)

That is correct, Kyrvias...just checked. Thieves cannot use crossbows of any kind in IWD1.
