Anybody ever read this series? It's a set of 12 books (I think there's another trilogy after that) edited by George R.R. Martin. But there are multiple authors contributing. Not just a different author per book, but several people contributing to each book.

The premise is that an alien race of psionics created a virus ("the Wildcard") that would give the infected newer/stronger powers. They used Earth as a lab experiment. When it was released in the atmosphere, most of the infected died instantly as their bodies tried to morph into twisted monstrous aberrations. Now the world is populated with uninfected "Nats" (natural humans), infected "Jokers" who live with incredible deformities, and a few "Aces" who were infected and developed useful abilities.

I'm starting book 8 and they keep impressing me with new characters & abilities. This would make a good roleplaying world...
