LotR comes closest from all the fantasy movies I've ever seen, but even in that, Gimli is used for comic relief.

I know what you mean. The dwarf in Dungeons & Dragons: The Movie was, well, not that good really.

He was made out as a very stereotypical dwarf. I do think Gimli was done well though, his look, his manorisms. I do admit he was comic relief though.

John Rhys Davies did a good job playing Gimli though, you have to admit.

I agree, krunchyfrogg. Gimli came the closest to representing what a dwarf should be, and it's a shame Peter Jackson couldn't resist using him as comic relief. It was acceptable in some cases ("It still only counts as one") but was completely IN-appropriate at others (when Gimli tells Aragorn to "toss him" during the battle of Helm's Deep). I wouldn't mind a little comedy, but dwarves are traditionally some of the BADDEST fighters around. Elves are great at archery, but dwarves are the masters of melee'. It would have been nice if Jackson had emphasized that historic fighting prowess a little more.

Ah well, at least the pendulum is finally swinging in the right direction.

a cool dwarf would be totally unrealistic.

I'd say that Al Pacino made a good one in Scarface.

I second that!

It is hard for me to picture a cool dwarf. Will it be a dwarf that wields two axes and his warcry "GRAARGH stays away from meh jewels!" and uses both his weapons to bulldoze through his foes leaving bloody chunks behind? A dwarf that can take like fifty arrow shots and then raises his sheild, because it is just starting to hurt? A dwarf with a magic axe...that can be used like a classic aussie boomerang?

you consider a male wth jewels to be cool?

Sir Degrader 01-02-2005 09:50 AM

I believe that Liberace ended that trend.

You know what I mean I think I may have used the wrong word.

I meant golden scepters, a crown adorned with rubies, and maybe some mithril from a certain hall
