As many had predicted, "Lord of the Rings" has emerged as Lord of the Oscars. Peter Jackson's magic picked up all eleven prizes it was nominated for - only the third film to do so in the 76-year history of the academy awards. Sean Penn scooped best actor for his performance as the tormented and vengeful father of a murdered girl in "Mystic River." Charlize Theron confirmed predictions by winning best actress for her portrayal of a female serial killer in "Monster." Sofia Coppola won best original screenplay for Lost in Translation, which had been a strong contender for best film and best actor for Bill Murray.

"You're giving us an incredibly overwhelming night," Jackson said, later thanking the Academy for seeing past the trolls and orcs and other creatures "and honouring a fantasy film."

In the end, the New Zealand-made film swept all 11 categories in which it had been nominated, devastating the competition in most of the craft awards. That total ties Ben-Hur (1959) and Titanic (1997) for the all-time record in Oscars. In addition, the clean sweep is also only the third time that any film has done that. The others were Gigi (1958) and The Last Emperor (1989) and each of those took only nine of nine.

To add to this party, LotR made it's billion dollars in half the time that Titanic did, and those are the only two movies to gross a billion, from what I read.
