In the Cloakwood Mines trying to take down these cursed battle horrors, but getting slaughtered.

I did a search and discovered that dispelling their swords would be a good idea, but this has proven completely ineffectual so far. I've cast about 10 dispels on them altogether and none have taken effect. I get the 'Battle Horror - Dispel Effects' message but nowt happens.

Am I too low a level or something? Branwen is a level 5 cleric, Luthan is a level 5 wild mage - I would've thought that's sufficient for the task here...

Any advice would be gratefully received

Edit:

They're dead after a couple of skull traps, arrows of ice, much healing of Kagain, wand of magic missiles and a lot of panicking!

But I'd still be interested to know why the dispels failed...

You can't dispel their weapons.

IIRC, if you simply disarm the traps, then the battle horrors won't even appear.

Missile weapons are a key to taking out difficult creatures, such as Battle Horrors.

Thanks Andyr - that would explain it! You'd be amazed how many times that was mentioned in the forum search I did!

And yes, that would work too Lord, but I tripped the trap the first time and don't like using reload knowledge where I can avoid it. Plus having to avoid an enemy doesn't sit well with my pride!

I wonder if TUTU has something to do with it. I remember being able to dispel their weapons - it didn't help all that much because they still hit quite hard with their hands. When playing solo, or as a small party with no thief, I usually charm the gaurd and send him in first, then use entangle or web to keep them at long range. It is also possible to stun them if you have right spells.
There are also a couple of other places where they appear and I am sure I have managed to dispel their weapons previously.

they were not so tough as long as you can avoid meleeing. of course i had 3 mages this last time and its been so long i dont remember how tough they may have been previously. i had one tank kiting them while i nailed them with magic missiles. seemed to work as they each took one load of missiles from my mages. pretty nice exp too so i wouldnt want to avoid them. i forget if it was 2000 or 4000 already, but either way its worth a couple spells off each mage that i get back once i rest again.

Dispel does indeed work in normal BG1, it must be the presence of Tutu that's making their Flame Blades difficult to Dispel. (In BG2, the odds of Dispelling an effect are calculated by comparing the levels of the two casters--a low-level Wizard, Cleric, or Bard has a very low chance of Dispelling something cast by a higher-level one.)
