Just getting into some more Dragonlance novels, and picked up 'The Thieves Guild' book. Part of the 'Crossroads' series.

I'm nearly done with it, and it's actually one of the better novels I've read (out of the Forgotten Realms and DL series). It has Mystery, and loads of 'being chased' chapters which are non-stop action, and I couldn't stop reading it!!! If you like Thieves, YOU MUST BUY this book. Even if you don't like Dragonlance.

Now, I need some help with the Dragonlance series, and how the entire series of books go, in order. I have read 2 or 3 Dragonlance Novels, and a few things are confusing.

1. What is this 'Chaos War' they talk about?
2. The 'War of the Lance' I know. I played the Goldbox game. Was it like the game?

Can someone give me a link, or tell me the back-story summery of what happened in the DL realm without giving away TOO many spoilers?

Basically, I have finished nearly ALL the Forgotten Realms novels (all 130-ish of them) and now, I want to begin with Dragonlance.

Which book should be my FIRST? (When I mean first, I mean; 'the first book released, and starts the series). I want to read them as the timeline goes kinda.

Any help would be very appreciated!!

UPDATE: I found the novel listing at wizards.com, but still let me know if I should follow this order.

Here is the page of DL Novels in order:

Start with DL Chronicles trilogy and then Legends trilogy. I only read those two so I dont know about the rest. But these two are the start of the series and they're awesome!

I'm a bit reluctant to buy DL novels from other authors than Weis & Hickman, if you read them, are they good?

Dragons of Summer Flame cronicles the War of Chaos, the recent weis and hickman books about the War of souls are supposedly good, Personally I like Richard Knaak, who wrote Legend of Huma, Kaz the Minotaur, Land of the Minotaurs and several short stories dealing with either/both minotaurs or/and Knights of Solamnia while not set in the current time (Huma and the others were way way before the Cataclysm) they are a good read, and very entertaining.

several of the short story anthologies may be helpful in figuring out what you like. Personally I hated the preludes novels, but some swear by them, and overall Dragonlance has the problem of too few characters and too many authors that want to write about those same dozen or so characters

Ziroc have you read the Vlad Taltos books (by Stephen Brust)... if you like the Thieving/seedy side of town type fantasy (almost a mobster book in disguise), that series is very enjoyable.

The Thieves World decology I'd also highly recommend, it's a bit disjointed at times (since it was written by a number of authors, each with their own characters) but was a neat change of pace (almost like reading a book of short stories, some very good, some not as good) when I read it years ago.

Hey :D

Yeah that list at Wizards. is pretty much in order, read through em like that and you will be starting an epic quest in itself haha...
Be warned that there are quite a few stinkers in the DL series but then again there's a lot of fantastic ones as well. Chronicles and Legends are a must read and likely some of the best this series has to offer. Leave the Dragons of a new Age and War of souls till LAST, otherwise you're gonna spoil the hell out of yourself...

I could list a bunch of the GOOD DL novels but i cannot remember as it's been ages since i've read them... But it still is one of the best series i've ever read, really good stuff :D Better than forgotten realms by FAR.

Oh and to get the back story of DL... read the books !! hahaha aside from the main sttory arcs there are heaploads of books that deal with events that happen between the major stories etc and deal with the history of krynn :D I believe there is even a 'Histories' series somewhere as well as a 'preludes'...

Great to know another person about to be sucked into DragonLance :D haha

That is definately true. There are a few of the DL books that I wouldn't go near!

I only read the books by Weis and Hickman and Chronicles series is one of my favorites. I couldn't put them down when I was reading them! "Tales" was alright, but I got bored in the end. I guess it depends on who is your favorite character. I also started reading the War of Souls and was a little dissapointed with how slow the story started..

You want to read Dragon's of Summer Flame after you've read through Chronicles,Legends, and Tales, otherwise you will get a little confused.

Ziroc I asked the same questions over in WOTC not a month ago . I too am going heads on with the DL books as I'm wear of the FR setting for now and need a change. Right now I'm just finishing up on the chronicles series but had already read the legends series a few years back. I do love DL, can't wait for the DLA to happen either.
