I've read several books about Drizzt and his companions now (Dark Elf Trilogy, Icewind Dale Trilogy and Legacy of the Drow), and to be honest, I don't quite know what to think. Some people I know are totally into Drizzt (not literally) while others call him the worst character ever to be put on paper.
I would say that he started out well in the Dark Elf Trilogy where in the Icewind Dale books (which were written first) he was more of a 'mysterieus stranger' kind of char. In Legacy of the Drow and its sequels however, I saw our Drow friend fall slowely appart. If one were to remove the words 'Drow Ranger' and put down 'Elf Paladin instead' few would know the difference.
Since I haven't read all of the Drizzt books yet (I found Cunninghams 'Starlight and Shadows' drow a bit more realistic, so I defected) I was hoping to get some extra opinions from fellow readers...

I've read the Dark Elf Trilogy, and thought it was fantastic, I've read the Icewind Dale Trilogy and again thought it was great, but the legacy of the drow eludes me, I can't find it anywhere over here in Britain, but I'm beginning to think its not really worth the effort in finding it. To be entirly honest I can't remember ever hearing any good words about the legacy of the drow books, are they really that bad?

I enjoyed the legacy of the drow books, the ones after that tend to be just more of the same however.

Drizzt was pretty good in both the Dark Elf and the Icewind Dale trilogy. I also liked Legacy of the Drow... the war between the Dwarves and the Drow was very amusing. Unfortunatly, Drizz't kinda loses his charm along the way. He pretty much loses everything that makes him Drow, which is a real shame..

I might still give it a bash then, thats if I can ever get hold of a copy, I swear I must hold the world record for the highest number of Ebay bids placed on that book lol

I pretty much agree with Dreamer's opinion of Drizzt. He's not a bad character, and he started out great, but his personality kinda got washed out during the Legacy books. I think Salvatore should have been much more subtle with his portrayal of Drizzt. As it is, Drizzt carries no traits of his drow culture at all. I understand that he's supposed to be different from his drow relatives, a shining jewel amist the black heartless drow. But Drizzt is too good. He's freakishly good. I think it's Drizzt's bland personality that turns me off rather than his uber fighting prowess.

Anyway, if you've liked the Drizzt books so far, then reading the rest of them will probably be enjoyable for you. They're not as well done as the first two trilogies, but they're not bad reads imo. Lots of combat [img]smile.gif[/img]

having read all the books in the Drizzt saga, i think that it has really become the same story taking place in different areas of the world. They are always looking for each other....be honest Id like to see one of them die. It would bring back some of the realizm(?sp) of adventuring..it worked in Dragonlance and it should work here as well. Although I am enjoying the War of the Spider Queen books so far....all the best/worst of the Drow.

Well, here we have a problem. I think it'd be good to see someone die, too. But, Salvatore is notoriously unable to keep folks dead. Bruenor - like phoenix returned from the ashes. Entreri - in a scene reminiscent of what Cathy Bates hated in Misery (50s cliffhangers flicks that don't really explain how the guy got away), he gets rescued from certain doom. Wulfgar - like some ghast come alife in Night of the Walking Dead, you can't keep a good barbarian down - even if you are a Demon in the Abyss.

But, Salvatore finally got cohones - he killed Chewbacca in his first-ever LucasArts book. Can he do it again? Will Chewie come back? Inquiring Minds want to know.
