I don't usually read horror books, but I've gotten hooked on Bently Little's books. I had to buy and read "The Mailman" because my dad is a postal worker, and I wanted to find out which was scarier (dad still wins that one, lol). I've also read "The Summoning" and "The Town", and I'm going to read "The Return" next. What I find so interesting about them, is that they usually have a family for the main characters and most of them are based on some kind of folk legend. "The Mailman" was more of an original one, though.
What I found scary in them was that no matter what the creature/monster was, it was the people fighting each other in their fear of what was happening. Having your father or sister or best friend turn against you (and even physically attack) in a time when you'd need them the most, would be more terrifying than being attacked by any supernatural thing.

If you want really scary short story, read "The House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe. I don't think I've ever felt simply *terrified* after reading a damn book.

Sometimes the books seem much more scary thatn any of the horror movies, mostly because since you're reading instead of watching, your own imagination gets to you. Also, you can't really look away during the scary parts. [img]tongue.gif[/img]

the book that gave me the creeps was the dark half by Strphen King....something about the other part of ourselves coming to light.....and all those crows....BLAH!!

Hmm, do you know if H.P Lovecraft's books are any good? I was thinking on finding some soon...

But with H.P. is like with some other authors - you can love it or hate it. No inbetween.
I love his short stories. They are his forte. He did write a couple of novels, but the energy charge dwindles after a while.
And he's sometimes much more dpressive than Poe - if you can believe that [img]smile.gif[/img]

Do try Barker. One of his later works. Like Gallileo or Sacrament. Esp. the first one - it really adds a new dimension to the genre & it's unlike anything I've read before (with me being a horror fan to boot [img]smile.gif[/img] )

Didn't he write things like necronomicon, and call of cthulu and stuff like that. Hmm i have to check the library today anyway...

Well, I can safely recommend any of his short stories collections. I wouldn't know the original titles since I read translations - except one novel called "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward". It is only loosely tied to Cthulu mythos, but a readable one in spite of that.

I've only read a couple of Stephen King books and one Clive Barker. Have most of the Ravenloft series, though. Have they stopped making any more of those? I haven't seen any new ones for a while.
