I have a party with a lot of fighters and rangers (at least multicalsses): Minsc, Coran, Kivan, Yeslick, fighter/mage protagonist. imoen just uses a short bow.

anyway, what are the 5 best weapons I can use? my game is young, and I can still mold my characters as id like. thanks

ps: oh yeah, if you could help me with a missle and melee suggestion, thatd be awesome!

In my own irritating way, I'll tell you the absolute truth when I say that the best weapons in the game are the ones in the hands of whoever won the most recent fight.

The most powerful weapons in the game are of +3 enchantment, although there are very few of these. Most weapon types have at least one +2 version floating around, and a very few types have nothing better than a +1 available in-game. Of course, the level of enchantment on a weapon is not always the most important indicator of how useful it can be.

The most important thing to remember is to spread out your weapon proficiencies. If you put together a party of 6 people where everybody has points in Axe, and you only find one good Axe, how many proficiency points have you just wasted?

Since nobody in your party can put more than 2 stars into a weapon, you don't have to worry about investing a lot into a weapon class that turns out to be a dud. Just try to make sure that each weapon category has some representation by at least 1 party party member, and as soon as you find a +2 or +3 version of that weapon type, have somebody put a 2nd star in it.

It's generally a very wise policy to have everybody keep a melee weapon and a ranged weapon equipped at all times. That way, you can send an archer up to the front, or pull a wounded Tank out of the battle, at a moment's notice. Try to match the number of hands: For instance, someone who uses a one-handed melee weapon would do well to use a one-handed ranged weapon, so they can wear a Shield. Similarly, those who use Spears and 2-Handed Swords should carry Bows or Crossbows.

Well, Six basically said it all. My favourite weapon in the game is the Warhammer (which I can't remember the name of) +2 +1vs. eletrical. I always make sure I pick it up, and am happy in BG2 when I see it waiting for me just a fight away too. For tips on finding good weapons, make sure you explore the country, you might find more than you bargained for ;)

i think that without the expansion, greywolf's long sword is the best

Varscona, as Rockstar observes, is the best long sword. There is also a +2 halberd, Spider's Bane as a two-handed sword, the Long Bow of Marskmanship, the Heavy Crossbow of Accuracy, and the Light Crossbow of Speed for ranged weapons. Generally, the "best" weapon in the game is the Dagger of Venom, because only undead are immune to its poison. As long as you can come across a +2 version of a particular weapon, stick with it.

You can always pick Drizzt's pocket for a scimitar +3.

Give that to Minsc, along with that returning axe.

Give Yeslick either the staff of striking or the staff mace.

I prefer the light crossbow of speed over the heavy crossbow of accuracy, but I don't know who to give that to in your party (maybe the protagonist).

Interesting, because I prefer the Heavy crossbow of Accuracy, especially in the hands of someone not in the front lines when facing mages. BG1 counts crossbows as missile weapons, so when used with the Bracers of Archery you get +9 to hit, or +13 if you also use a Potion of Dexterity.

IMHO, if you have a fighter or multiclassed fighter, you're going to hit your enemy most of the time, no matter what. I'll take 2 attacks per round over 1.
