Well, I wonder if anyone has had this bug before..."Palin" on the northern section of werewolf island obviously has something important to say to me...he keeps walkig up to me and saying "hullo," but seems to have lost what else he was supposed to say. I figure that the file for his interaction is damaged, but I'm really not sure what to do about it all.
Either way, if the programmers thought him important enough to have him repeatedly walk up to me until he initiated dialogue properly (even though his dialogue is gone), he HAS to be important in my quest to slay everything that moves and is mean. |
Indeed he does have something to say, in fact he leads you somewhere.
I don't know what to do about it though, maybe reinstall Tales...? |
Well, I have the 3 disc version...so reinstalling TotSC means reinstalling everything...is there some file I can pull off of a disc to fix it?
I'm not familiar with the whole thing, so I don't know where to start as far as a search for the corrupted file goes. Oh, and btw, I know about Palin, just don't want to spoil, so don't consider that part of my question... :D |
I'm not sure what area that is, but maybe replacing the area####.bif file in the directory with the one off the disk would fix it.
I'm not sure if the problem would be with the map itself, or with the dialog.tlk file. Ah, here it is... The North Werewolf's Island is area 1500, so you might try replacing that area with the one on the disk (look for AREA1500.bif on the disk and your hard drive). Not sure if that will work though. Good luck. |
Did you try the good-old "walk up and stab em in the face" strategy? That has fixed many dialogue loops in my games, and it should surely "initiate" the correct response from Palin. You can't be missing too much from taking this route, can you?

Actually, that was the very first thought I had, Brainless...but it doesn't work. he just dies like an NPC, and I get one tenth the experience I should get. I think that I'll try the area file trick...I'll report back if it works!

See, it's a little-known fact, but Palin is actually a distant cousin of Noober and Neeber. If you talk to him long enough, he'll give you arrows.

lol
Illumina, that defective Palin filled more of my dialogue box than Noober could have if he had pestered me ALL DAY. I think that he was saying "hullo" (I have dialogue captions on, but the sound was muted) about twice a second...and I let him do it for three minutes at least, before I realized something was wrong. As an update, I cannot simply replace the *.bif files. THe three disc version has some crazy proprietary compression on it. The area files are now *.cbf files on the disc, so I can't simply swap it out. Time for a reinstall? [ 12-13-2004, 12:16 PM: Message edited by: Ilander ] |
Well, I am a wellspring of problems. It seems that the game decided to mess up the uninstallation process. My system now claims that it is still on the hard disk, but cannot uninstall it, because the uninstallation file is missing.
I'm going to brute-force this one...maybe it'll work. UPDATE: Brute force worked. I deleted the game directory, then opened up setup.exe on the first disc, my computer none the wiser. Now Palin did what he was supposed to do. [ 12-13-2004, 01:46 PM: Message edited by: Ilander ] |
