By Philip Pullman.
Teenage trilogy (still waiting for book 3) But SUCH a great read! First book is called 'Northern Lights', the second 'The Subtle Knife'. At the beginning of Northern Lights the principle character doesn't seem all that well drawn... but carry on reading! I'm not telling anything else about these books - but the concept and realisation are superb. READ IT! READ IT! READ IT! You'll be glad you did! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif ------------------ http://www.ranchoweb.com/images/bg2guy/bitchingcopy.gif http://www.ranchoweb.com/images/bg2guy/fljotsdale.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...s/EEhearts.gif |
Look, IGNORE the fact that this is a teenage trilogy! Its GOOD! VERY good! Try to get hold of book 1 & 2, and if you see book 3 in your local book shop - TELL ME! I can't wait for it!
If you don't read this trilogy, you are missing a real treat! ------------------ http://www.ranchoweb.com/images/bg2guy/bitchingcopy.gif http://www.ranchoweb.com/images/bg2guy/fljotsdale.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...s/EEhearts.gif |
OK, OK!! I'll try it next time I hit the book store. (BTW, I saw the third book, "The Amber Spyglass", listed at bn.com with a publication date of Oct. 2000, so you might want to check it out)
There's nothing at all wrong with enjoying kids' books; some of my favorites include Susan Cooper's "Dark Is Rising" sequence, Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series, and anything by John Bellairs or Roald Dahl - and let us not forget C.S. Lewis' Narnia series or Tolkien's "The Hobbit"! |
On your recommendation, Fljotsdale, I'll try it. I don't care who the target audience is, as look as the book is good. My book club has an omnibus edition available, so that makes it easy to get the series. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
BTW, the title of the first book is 'Northern Lights' for the UK edition, but is called 'The Golden Compas' for the US edition. ------------------ Nid yw'r hoff o lyfr yn fyr o gyfaill. |
Good recommendation, Fljotsdale! I have read the first two books already and enjoyed them emmensely. The Golden Compass was my fav though. I have read The Dark is Rising as well and really like it.
My recommendations: The Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce, especially for girls. (that's where I got my nic) ------------------ http://members.aol.com/lasttrueprinc...s/lioness1.gif Official teaser and ranger of the HADB Clan "Evil round every corner...careful not to step in any."-Minsc |

I am really glad you enjoyed the Pullman books! Nice to find someone else who has read them! My ex-son-in-law recommended them to me - he has VERY good taste in books! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif The Dark is Rising is a bit scary! Good, but scary. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/uhoh2.gif ------------------ http://www.ranchoweb.com/images/bg2guy/bitchingcopy.gif http://www.ranchoweb.com/images/bg2guy/fljotsdale.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...s/EEhearts.gif [This message has been edited by Fljotsdale (edited 06-23-2001).] |
Fljotsdale,
I just wanted to say thanks. On your recommendation, I got these books and read them. I really enjoyed them. Not only that, but my mother read them too, and she also like them. So, thanks lots. ------------------ Nid yw'r hoff o lyfr yn fyr o gyfaill. |
