I never did finish LOTR, I read some when I was real young, but never finished all of it..

I just bought the 'Trilogy' (it's actually one large story), and I'm reading anew.. I never knew that this book was printed in 1955!!! WOW!

Question is, how good is it?? (I bet it's AWESOME).. it's a total of 1100+ pages too! Is this an Advanced reading book? I read L.Ron Huddards books (some) is it advanced like that? Learning a language and stuff sounds fun.. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

A quick postscript....

If you are interested in learning about the languages in the books, I can provide some links to online and printed dictionaries of the elven, dwarven, and black (orcen) languages. Some even have audio pronounciation guides... In addition, there are grammar guides, and links for atlases, maps, histories...

It is one of the most researched works known to man...

gotta love it...

WOW. This may sound stupid, but In your opinion, is it better than the Drizzt Saga? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif I'm SURE it is.. It's probably 1000000 times beter..

I'll do some research, thanks for the info.. wow!

BTW, I DID download and listen to the Mp3 of J.R.R reading... amazing stuff!
That's what made me want to buy it and finish it.

I hope the Movie version does it justice.. the D&D movie was a TOTAL joke..http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

Thanks!!!!!

It's difficult to compare to the Drizzt saga, but I must admit that I am biased...

let me explain.

What you read in modern fantasy books all have a link back to the LOTR, especially anything having to do with the Forgotten Realms. Most modern sagas have borrowed SO mush from Tolkien and his worlds...

When you read it, you are reading back to the original in modern high fantasy...

BUT, remember that Tolkien borrowed heavily from the Norse mythos, and many others.. His was just a retelling, with an English "twist" that makes it more comfortable for many.

If you want info about the languages, here's a link to get you started

I don't know about the Drizzt saga, but I have never read another book like it.
No one has every written such a detailed fantasy before or after. It's as if
Middle Earth was real some how, with all the detail that LoTR has in it. It's
more complete (I think thats the word I'm searching for) than any thing else.
To me that's what makes it so special.

I too hope the movie does it justice. I'm usually disappointed in movies that are made from books. I know that there is no way that the movie will be as good as the book. But I keep hoping!

If they take my gun can I still use my Claymore?

Unfortunately the film looks like it'll be a poor attempt. Allow me to explain, firstly quite a few of the stories elements are being tuned down to allow the director to concentrate on the love story (barely mentioned in the original) between Aragorn and Arwen. He's also using a lot of American and New Zealand actors whose culture and speach patterns just doesn't fit in with Tolkiens linguistic visions. The good man himself described his work as a "journey through a world of different languages, it is as if the map is a map of languages". They at least got Alan Lee to do a lot of the concept art for the film (he's done a lot of good fantasy/ Celtic mythology art) and that should be good. I recently dug up some old miniatures from the back of my modelling draws, Dean men of Dunharrow, an Easterling, a Rohirim (on foot and on horse), Tom Bombadil, the best Balrog I have ever seen (the 80's Citadel one) and a whole host of others. However, they're cutting Tom Bombadil out of the film for no reason at all! This happened with the radio version as well (try to get hold of it, it's reasonably good on pronounciation and Michael Horden makes the best Gandalf ever).

I have the on radio version on tape and it was quite good. They did cut some parts out though. I still enjoyed it though. I know they cannot ever follow
the book completely. If it's decent then I'll be happy.
