Hey, here's my party, and I'm wondering which of these two guys I should bring with me:

Cleric/Ranger protagonist (haven't decided if I should DC or MC)
Jaheira
Minsc
Dynaheir
Imoen

Ajantis or Khalid

I know Khalid and Jaheira are a pair, but I also know there are ways around that. Is a fighter a better character than a paladin?

If you can stand Khalid's whining then I would go with him as he can aquire more pp's than a paladin and fighters are all round better fighters (figures).

but you might want to use Ajantis' turn undead and his high CHA makes him a good leader. Also he has better strength IIRC.

If this question is about power, I have always favored Ajantis over Khalid.

Khalid has a really pathetic Strength for a fighter... He can't always carry his weight, in several senses of the word.

But what can I say? I like him and I don't like Ajantis... so in the end it's a matter of preference.

I also love Khalid, even though he is sheepish. You can easily tart him up and make him a great tank...but then I don't take Ajantis on many occasions.

Khalid, definately. Paladin skills get nowhere in BG1.

From a character or role playing perspective, I'd go for the skittish anxiety and unlikely heroics of Khalid over the cookie cutter self-righteousness of Ajantis.
However, I'm with Six on it from a purely power based perspective.

I had both of them in my party the first time I finished the game...

I would go with Ajantis, although you could look at the tables in the manual to figure out whether Khalid's extra stars provide more or less of an advantage than Ajantis's superior strength. (Also, bear in mind high strength has uses other than fighting advantages, so all other things being equal, go with Ajantis).
