So, after reading about it forever, I decided to give the mod a try last night. From what little I've seen it looks great; Ziroc must have put a lot of work into it.
My only problem however, is the fact that it's treating me like a stepchild. Is it possible to solo in this mod? I haven't had much luck with it yet, without leaving Waterdeep--my sorcerer has developed a negative Pavlovian reaction to the word "Slime". And Cookie seems unsure of what to do with the sharp, shiny bit of metal in his hands. Any advice, strategies, etc? I should mention that I haven't played NWN in almost a year and I've never played anything online before except Warcraft (not WOW) and UT2004. |
Ok, I saw another thread talking about this and so I know it's possible. But I still need advice on keeping my poor sorcerer alive.

Yes you can solo it, for the most part without dying also. However, you have to know where you're going and go there slowly, with a solid character.
It's easier to team up, and even then you can expect to die a couple of times along the way. The most important thing to remember is there's no reason to keep going further down if you're still having trouble with the creatures on your current level. |
Ah, it was you who gave me a slime-bath when I visited the sewers. I wasn't expecting company when I went there. Fighter types are ok to solo in this mod, spell-casters suffer. I recommend a party. Also still spell (and auto still spell) and heavy armour if you want to live to see lvl 14!
|
I saw you were on the other day, Mr. Mopery! Next time I'll bring a slightly higher character and team up if you like! :D
It really is hard to get a magic wielder through without dying.....alot! LOL But even my tougher pc's have bought it on levels as low as 1...danged mindscucking critters got my lvl 8 ranger the other night....over and over and over...and she wasn't alone! :D It's a good mod and it helps to have a party, but like the others have said, you can do it solo if you're very careful! |
Forget careful. You'll still probably get killed.
Do what I did. Accept the numerous deaths and run away when times get hard (which they will, trust me). From there, always look to see if someone has gone through the level ahead of you. If you purchase a lot of bags of holding (something this gamer HIGHLY recommends), you can then stuff your pockets full of fallen and discarded loot to sell to Durnan later. As well, make sure to visit the store in down for better weaponry than what you'll find in Durnan's regular stock. Unless you are feeling lucky, then check through what OTHER people have sold to Durnan. More often than not (especially as of recent weeks again) high level characters will do "dumps" there, and sell to Durnan a lot of items they have no use for. If you see something you like there and you can afford it - BUY IT! Don't wait, don't hesistate. Use the overage of others to benefit yourself. The best part of this module is that it is not "true RPG" in that if you die you don't lose what you have gained previously. Use that to your advantage at the lower levels, mainly as death is almost assured sooner or later. Just don't let it stop you (completely). |

Somehow my sorceror made it up to 9 and camped in a dark corner, hoping he'd miraculously be teleported back to the Inn in Waterdeep. Passers by might have been puzzled by what seemed to be a thicket of bushes whimpering "Mommy...I want my Mommy." Anyway, unlike every other time no miraculous teleportation occurred so the poor elf had to pull it together this morning, accept his fate and run jibbering through level 9, dying at every possible opportunity, until he found some stairs, at which point the jibbering mostly subsided. Halfway through 7 now, on the way up. Escape from Undermountain, indeed. To make a point (finally), I have very much embraced tactical suicide as a role-playing option. My sorceror has decided the magic in his veins comes, not from dragons, but from magic cats. Oh, and he picked up a bunch of magic bags. Thanks for the advice. |
Welcome to Undermountian! That unfortuneate event also happened to me one of the first times I decided to go a little deeper than level 2. Yes indeed I was similiarly surprised and did roughly the same things - only I was alone. I made a note to myself - watch the teleporters and stairs!

Forget scruples. THOSE will get you killed sooner than being a paladin. *loves to pick on paladins.*
I am glad you took my advice on the magical bags. Being someone who loves gaming of all sorts, the fact that Neverwinter Nights forgets reality completely when it comes to being a packrat works in your favour. Of course, the one problem is remembering everything you have in your inventory. *laughs* I have managed to have items in there for weeks because I forgot THAT bag was the one that had the stuff I was attempting to get rid of (amongst others). Soloing is a tried and true stable of the silicon-based role-playing game. So is, of course, stuffing your pockets full of stuff and hawking it at the latest -=Store!=-. (you know what I mean.) I have gone through this game mostly on my own, and have done not too terribly bad for myself. Of course, if Ziroc ever implemented even half of the crazy ideas I have thrown down on this board, I am sure I would still only have one character on here, and be stuck in the middle of something brand new anyway. Whatever you do, however, remember to feed Choc catnip at least once when you find some. Trust me, it is worth hunting that stuff down. *laughs* Though I wouldn't mind seeing more potential NPC henchmen - perhaps one for every level of the Undermountain thus far, and maybe a few others for the special areas (like the Trollbark Forest, the Haunted Island, and Waterdeep itself.) *votes for the return of Linu, that bard Sharwyn, and Tomi Undergallows - him for Waterdeep! oh yea, and Aribeth too.* |
