When do I start getting my Bhaal Powers? When I first get to Nashkel? Or do they show up after the first few chapters too? I can't remember.

In the Nashkell Mines area before you enter the actual mines. Just go to sleep there, it's the earliest place you can get it at AFAIK.

You get them pretty much once a chapter, iirc...starting with chapter 2, maybe? Somebody help me out here...

Ilander is correct. You'll get them near the beginnings of each chapter, starting at chapter two (assuming Chapter Two begins after the Nashkel Mines).

You can get your first ability just before you get into the mines. It comes with a dream about Gorion. Since the event that the dream pertains to happens in the prologue and not chapter 1 then you get your first ability in chapter 1. Chapter 2 gets you the second one.

I just entered Nashkel (thus starting chapter 2), rested, and got my first power. Are you saying this should be my second, that I should have got one last chapter when I was going to the FAI?
Or am I right on track?

I'm playing the BGT mod, and I can't remember when I started getting powers in my last real BG1 game (I thought they started after Gorion died). Just want to make sure it's not a bug.

The dreams are indeed somewhat caused by certain events, but ONLY events that drive the actual chapters. Thus, statements like "You should get your first dream soon after entering Nashkel" are erroneous--the dreams are CHAPTER-based, not event-based.

Dreams occur the first time you Rest after starting each new chapter, starting in Chapter 2. Their timing is determined by nothing else.

Hmmm, are you sure about that? I've only successfully gotten the first DuHM while sleeping in the 1st part of the Candlekeep Catacombs. I usually just sleep in the part where you can get the Cloak of Protection +2. I kept resting in the 2nd area (with all the dopplegangers) and never got the ability IIRC. But going back to the first area and resting got me the ability. Maybe it's just coincedence?

Sounds like you got ambushed while sleeping...but I'm not sure...
