I was just wondering if maybe some of you old time 2nd edition guys know why this isn't a viable dual-classing combo?

Nerull 05-07-2004 07:35 AM

Because it's not in the rules.

Really, that's the only reason. I guess that they thought that no self-respecting druid would learn the destructive magic of a mage. Other than that, no real reason.

That's why I like 3rd edition; no restrictions on race and/or class combinations.

From a roleplaying perspective I really see no reason except the path of the mage is far different from the path of the druid.. But, really, in Faerun, magic and the Weave are part of nature, just like dryads and druids.

likewise, why cant you be a barbarian/thief instead of a fighter/thief, or a ranger/mage. Maybe the creators of the rules thought that they would be too powerful or something.

That's the same reason they wont let you dual class a paladin as well, right?

Illumina Drathiran'ar 05-08-2004 09:18 PM

Actually, by 3rd edition rules, paladins, like monks, can not dual class(though there are a few exceptions). "The path of a paladin requires a constant heart. Once you undertake the path, you must pursue it to the exclusion of all other careers. Once you have turned off the path, you may never return."

Makes sense.

This is a compromise which isn't quite the dual class that you're suggesting, but I've done it in my latest journey and it has been great fun...fun which hasn't finished just yet. ;)

You could always look into starting out as a Druid from BG1 then import to BG2 and take the Avenger kit. This way, you obtain particular spells from the early level mage grimoire...I'll leave it up to you to investigate the details, but it does have its advantages.
