i've got a question... i have created my character all new since the shadows of undrentide got out and from there until level forty in hordes of the underdark, after it i save my character and when i'm going to play a multiplayer my character dosen't appear as a choice, in other words i cannot play with my own avatar, so i thougth i must need to give my character to the owner of the server and then pearhaps i'll be able to choose him. yet i'm still don't truly know if that's what is needed to play with my own character online, can you give me some hints please???

There are two options for new characters on servers. Local vault or server vault. Local vault means players can use their own characters they've created, server vault means they need to choose one from the pregenerated characters from the servers. Server vault is mostly used to prevent illegal or overpowered characters. Most of the time when a server uses server vault you won't be able to play with your own character, unless you know the owner and he wants to do you a favour.

You can customise a server vault character just as the pre-generated local vault characters (the characters in the list that you didn't create)

What philip said, you most likely tried to play on a server that only allows 'Server Vault' characters. You'll have to create a new character specifically for that server.

Uh, maybe I'm missing something, but when you log onto a server vault, don't you have to create the character, before it will be there? Just a thought, but if you have never played on a server vault, the file under your player name will be empty, there are no pre generated server vault characters.
