Has anyone experienced this problem and found a fix for it?

Our NWN group host has been having a problem lately running HotU v1.61 under Windows XP. When trying to save a MULTIPLAYER game, the save terminates about 50% of the way through and then NWN crashes (complete system crash - not just a crash to desktop). Further, after rebooting, NWN will NOT run and it requires a TOTAL reinstall of the game. BTW, his system is a BRAND NEW system, 3.0 ghz with Win XP Pro.

I haven't seen anything like this on my system (which runs under win 98SE) and wonder if any of you XP Pro users had seen anything like this.

Thanks

NP's here. Is this server using any hakpaks that could conflict with a save?

Spiritwarrior,

How would a hakpak for a module conflict with a save done in the same mod?

SpiritWarrior 02-25-2004 06:29 PM

Yes sometimes a hakpak unrelated to the server can cause the problem, depending on what it does. But I was asking if this server actually uses any hakpaks at all .

Either way the explanation would be that since the 2da files were changed during the update then unless the hakpak was either made for 1.62 or given the 'all clear' for use with 1.62 then the game itself may have a problem when asked to record information (i.e. save). The info could conflict as the call to save the game attempts to ovewrite some newly-added resources but cannot as it finds the hakpak is using it. I have seen this before (this is why haks are labelled 1.30, 1.60, for use with sou etc.) but It's all theory in your situation as I don't know if you are using any at all.

Also, if the person experiencing the crash has edited things such as tlk files or 2da files (usually for custom spells, classes, PRC's) this could be the problem too. It is suggestivethat some custom content is involved since it requires a re-install of the game to get it running (resetting to default files). I would try removing haks and any custom content and give it a shot again but you know, this could simply be a new 1.62 bug....

Ah, thanks for the explanation. This occured under v1.61 so its possible that 1.62 solved the problem but doubtful.

I'll double check on the hak issue and let you know what I find out.

Thanks for the help.

Actually, I'm not sure if it's necessarily a hakpak issue as opposed to all the system *dll's that are being changed out there due to MS security patches, etc. I've been playing this game for awhile in WinXP (home & Pro versions), and haven't done much to change it, but I started experiencing crashes while just playing the game (not even saving) and the only difference is all the security patches being applied due to viruses (I was using 1.61 with no probs, then add the sec patches... poof... started having odd random crashes) Not sure if that helps, but that's my 2 cents worth.

Well I never said it was a hakpak, I simply said it is possible. It could be something totally different and unrelated. It could be a video card issue. It could be an update issue. I personally am running XP home and am fully updated (as always) with no problems ever. I never have mysterious crashes with this game and have been playing for since I bought this system. The only crash I do get is the XP bug thingy but it isn't all that often.

I get random xp crashes as well, but never during mp saves, but...I don't run the server. I did have two servers running at the same time today, with no problem. Maybe he has too much computer for the game? I'm just making that up, so don't think that is it. XP doesn't seem to like games at all though, especially mper games.

The problem is definitely Module related. We were successful in saving during all three of the Official Campaigns (OC, SOU and HOTU) with no problem. The module in question is the first Planar Tears module.

That really could be a version problem, since that has been out since before SoU. I've played it in single player, but not in mp'er mode, at least not yet. Uh, I'm not sure, but I think if it gets edited in the toolset, with the latest patches applied, it will update it to the correct version. Not sure on that, but others could point it out to me if I'm way off base.
