What is the proper sequence for the bridge control?

(Unfortunetly I would have to go back very far in my saved games to get something or someone with enough lore to "crack the code".)

Is there no one who knows how to get to the Beholders?

I think you have to line up the '!' marks in the centre. I never got to return there though so I amn't sure (bummer I know) after I went back for battle.

Don't read until you attempted to solve it by drinking a healing potion before the conversation

The code means 'row 1 left', 'row 1 right', 'row 2 left', 'row 2 right'... and so on.
You have to line up the |'s so they're in the centre, and there you go.

I didn't realize that you could manipulate the "!" marks by just pushing a single button.. (so of course I didn't know you could line them up.) Interesting though that I couldn't figure this out but that I did figure that the pearl of bashing had something to do with the control.
