when i was making my party, i was insanly idiotic enough to make my theif proficient in logn swords, why is it stupid, backstabbing!!!

how lond untill i level up and get a point that i can put into small swords

Every four levels, you get a proficiency.
You can backstab with short sword. I equip my thieves with short swords in BG1, although there are some decent daggers, too

Any, I repeat, ANY melee weapon that a true-classed Thief can use, is a valid Backstab weapon.
Daggers, yes.
Short Swords, yes.
Long Swords, yes.
Clubs,
Quarterstaves, yes.
Scimitars--no in BG1, yes in BG2.

yep - i'd go as far as to say that in BG1 longswords are the best backstab weapon (powerwise) - go for it

How do you back STAB with a stick?

You take the end of the stick and stick it in to your target's back [img]tongue.gif[/img] .
