when I rest shouldnt the game advance by 8 hours like in BG and IWD?? But when I rest the time dooesnt advance at all (according to the time which appears over the compass). is it a bug or is this how resting is supposed to be?

Nope, time doesn't advance more than the fifteen-thirty seconds it takes to rest. This takes multiplaying into account, you see... If resting took eight hours, the multiplay servers wouldn't be able to handle that.

It would be a nightmare to implement.

They could get away with it a BG, IWD multiplayer game as you would all be part of the same party. So you all rest together. In NWN you can have people running all over the place, several parties etc, so the only way they could make resting would be to actually make the NPC's resting rest for that amount of time. That would be annoying waiting that long.

They could make it real time so that you heal a certain amount of hitpoints over the time you are resting, and mages, cleric classes get back a number of spells as time goes on and you can pop out of rest time any time you want. As well as have instant time for a single player games. It would be a pain in the backside to code and no doubt would cause a few extra bugs. It probably wasn't worth the time and money to invest in such a minor detail so they just implemented the best way as not to annoy anyone.
