I've found Nax in a locked cell. I have 2 questions; (1) How do I get his cell unlocked and (2) if I don't get him out, what will I be missing?

Talk to him, he will tell you how to do it. You need to summon a water elemental and get it to open the door.

You won't miss much by not saving him though.
