I have a delightfull young monk ( currently lvl.5 ) whom I am thinking of dualling to become a cleric....I am however a little uncertain on how the dual-system works in NWN.

If I choose to dual him to Cleric, will I then be able to raise him further in Monk or is that a dead end....?

I´d like my monk to be more priest-like...thats why I am dualling him and I always needs those good pre-battle spells with a monk.

I am using Tomi as my henchman as always since I really need to plunder my way through NWN *LOL*

Forget the old dual and multi-class system for NWN - that was 2nd edition rules, NWN is 3rd edition. The way is works is this: whenever you gain enough experience to go up a level, you can either add another level of skill to an existing class OR take a level in a new class. The xp required to gain a new level is now TOTALLY class independent is determined by the total levels of all classes. For example, a ftr 5/ mage 4 and a rogue 8 / mage 2 require exactly the same xp to add another level. The manner in which you add levels in more than one class is totally up to you. You can build a monk 9 and then start adding cleric levels OR you can build a monk 5 / cleric 4 by alternating levels in each. Up to you.

The only exception is IF neither of the classes is a PREFERRED class for that character's race and the levels in each class are more than 2 (?) levels apart. For example, dwarves have fighter as a prefered class, so if you are building a multi-class dwarven fighter / anything else you don't need to pay attention to the diference in levels. If on the other hand you want to build a dwarven cleric / rogue then you DO need to keep an eye on the difference in the number of levels in each class or you suffer an XP penalty.

THANX

A little obscure explanation....I understand that I can just change class at will.

Let´s say I choose to "dual" my 5 lvl. Monk now...to a cleric....then gain 5 lvl. as a cleric and the switch back to Monk...would that be possible ??

Micah Foehammer 10-24-2003 09:36 AM

Yes, that is possible.

Sorry the explanation wasn't clearer. Blame it on lack of coffee .... lol

Quite okay old boy *LoL*

It´s just that the explanation is VERY technical...but after reading it four times I get the picture *DOH!*

LOL I got my caffeine fix, so I am better now.

BTW, what race is your monk? If I know that I can tell you whether you will suffer a penalty to XP.

shadowolf03 10-24-2003 09:58 AM

It sounds like Monks are quite popular...i'd didn't expect that since they don't have many things you can do with them...

Micah Foehammer 10-24-2003 10:03 AM

At low levels, Monks can be difficult to play - low hit points, inability to wear armor without losing some abilities, etc. At higher levels however, Monks are stone-cold killing machines. They can do incredible damage with the fists, gain some heavy duty abilities and have the potential for the best legal AC of any character class. Besides, how can you resist the animation for your Kung-Fu fighting character?

i could have sworn that monks werent able to switch profession and then switch back.
i never tried it myself, i do recall reading it someplace.

Decurion 10-24-2003 10:43 AM

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Gabrielles blades is right. Monks are "so devoted" to their...uhhhh....profession (?), that if they turn away from the monk path (violating their oaths) they are not allowed to return. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere.
