I'd like to add a custom portrait to my game to use for my PC, but am not sure where to save the files. I've read that they should go in the Portraits file, but I only have one for BGII, not BGI. Does that mean I save it in BGII? If not, can someone help me out? Thanks!

Make a new folder in BG1 and rename it portraits, then save them in there.
