Can anyone give me a reasonable explanation as to why I would ever make a Wizard instead of a Sorcerer?

better line in hats?

Sorcerers have a much more limited spell books. They get a set number of spells and that's it. They get to cast them more often is all. Wizards can chose from a larger spell variety and cast fewer of them. Basically a Sorcerer should be well thought out and should specialize. I have a friend who built a very powerful Enchantress. Who was outstandung against living creatures, but was completely useless against Undead. Chosing spells carefully is a must. Wizards can chose more diverse spells and are therefore more adaptable. A Necromancer Wizard is still effective againt the living. Because they are likely to have a few spells that are outside their area.

It boils down to what you like in the end.

Wizards are fun to play (same for sorcerror) but whats been bothering me is that NWN has these crap high level spells. I mean, wail of the bashee doesnt even kill pc's with a level higher then 16 (except for monks for some reason). Same goes for Weird. The transformation to red dragon spell, its nice, but the dragons statistics are crap, even a level 16 fighter does more damage then that creature. There are some other high level spells that are crap, but I think I made my point. I hope they change that soon and add some decent new spells (and raise the levelling up to say level 25?).

I don't know about you, but even if I learn every mage spells possible, I always memorise and use the same one all the time, so there is no point for me in having versatility. I simply don't need those other spells.

Luvian brings up a good point: which class you should select depends upon your personal style of playing. Some people like to use always the same spells, others (and I am only just becoming more like the second type) prefer to tailor the spells they have available to suit each specific phase of the quest. The second method is, admittedly, MUCH harder to play because you have to be somewhat of a psychic (or an experienced RPG'er) to know which spells to choose each time. That said, the Wizard class can be very rewarding to play if you like to put more role-playing time and thought into your game and less hack-and-slash; if not, then you are definite sorcerer material.

A few more points to add:
1. Being a Sorcerer(ess) in NWN is much cooler than in the previous Infinity Engine games because you CAN change your spell inventory when you level up.

2. The Sorcerer(ess) class uses Charisma as it's prime requisite (vital statistic) for determining things like number of spells per level, maximum spell level, etc. so to play a Sorcerer(ess) you need a high CHA. Having a high Intelligence (Wizard prime requisite), however, is cool because you get more Skill Points to distribute when you level up, bonuses on certain saving throws, etc. Bottom line--depends on what you're looking for.

Thank you all for the advice, however I think I will play a monk. <hehehe>

I found both classes hard to play. I do not care for NPC’s and without one the spell casters are just a pain in the butt.

Why a WIZARD? Because...

Their primary stat is INT so you get more skill points without weakening your class stat

They get High lvl spells a turn Earlier

You can adapt to every situation - a locked chest? memerize knock rest, and cast. Immune to magic baddies - cast buffing spells, summon a Vrock transform to Balor - kick @^^. Can't pick a lock? cast cats grace a couple of times and try again.

You get free metamagic feats so you can spend your other feat points in a better way.

All this said Sorcerers are still very powerful and a great dual combo with bards or paladins

Morgan_Corbesant 01-08-2003 01:23 PM

or you can do like me and nuke the room with fireballs, thereby destroying the chests and allowing you to take whatever is inside. Locked door? no problem, nothting a few magic missles or flame arrows can't fix. traps? no problem. that is what a pet and summons are for. my opinion? sorceror all the way. pure nukeing might.
