All depends on what style you like to play. Do you like to burst into rooms and hack and slash? Are you sneakier? Like magic? Most all of the classes are good for the right person.

Rogues are great sneakers and archers - sneak attack damage is handed out very liberally in NWN.

I started with a ranger and had no problems
Except with klauth.

Be whatever you like! The 3rd Edition rules make any class viable with the right strategies. If you're just starting, try fighter or barbarian, or if you're ready for a little challenge, take a sorcerer or wizard. :-D

It's not like D2 where sorceresses and amazons are super-powered and everyone else takes extreme skill to not suck... I play ranger...

I have always loved to play mages the most in games like this.
That is of cource when they get to a high enough level ;)

Happy B'day! mine is in exactly 1 month, I hope to get my copy then to!

The best class is the one you have the most fun with. I prefer rogue / wizard. It is a nice blend of stealth and power.

Playing a human rogue with 1 lvl in ranger is pretty fun, you get the good ranger abilities and a better weapon selection than a standard rogue.

My recommendation is any fighter class or subclass. First time through, trying to get the feel of the game...you MAY not want to deal with the added complexity of trying to throw spells. Plus, your fighters will live longer at the beginning, where mages are more weak at low levels...especially after they cast all their spells and are stuck fending off creatures with a broom stick.

The first time round, I had a level 19 rogue and 1 level of fighter taken at 19th level. The single class of fighter is to provide my character with essential feats like heavy armour, weapon proficiencies and weapon specialisation etc. Taken at high level so that I could input more skill points for concentration skill.
Then another level of rogue at level 20 to pump skill pts on Use Magical Items .
With enough spell scrolls and wands, I played my NWN character as close to my fighter/mage/thief Baldur's Gate character.
