Are either of the BG games compatible with WINXP? I've heard so many good things about both games and was wondering if its worth my time to purchase one or both of them.

Provided you've gotten the updates for XP there shouldn't really be any issues. I haven't run into any compatibility issues.

Any particular updates I should double check for?

BG1 should work flawlessly. Bg2 will require the latest official patch to work.

As far as windows updates go, the video drivers are the most important.

In addition to what andrewas has stated, I'd suggest making sure you check your video card's manufacturer's website for the appropriate driver. Often times the windows updating may give you the wrong driver update, or so I've been told.

Windows update under Windows XP is actually VERY good.

As soon as you get the new system, run Windows update and apply all updates. Then install your programs.

(best put a firewall up as well ;) ).

Then enjoy BG (it works well under XP) to your hearts content.

I have played Baldur's Gate 1 underXp so it should work.
