Restarted BG1 a few days ago. It's only my third time thru it, so I'm not an expert (SOA and TOB are more attractive due to their almost unlimited options, but BG1 has a very peculiar charm of its own, as I realize).
SPOILER + + + + + + I looted a +2 longsword off the corpse of Graywolf, a bountyhunter who was after Prism, the artist, who stole the jewels in Nashkell. I protected Prism and killed the thug. Now I'm using his sword. Everytime I score a hit the screen shows an effect like the sword would deal extra damage (elementary damage maybe). At least it reminds me of the effect I remember from BG2. But the text line says nothing about it. Does my poor mind make this up to fool me (punishment for all the late hours in dark rooms with only the PC screen on) or is there something to it? P.S. The sword's description says nothing about extra damage (besides the two points owed to the +2 enchantment). |
It does extra cold damage, and it's supposed to say that in the description too...
|
I use the sword with khalid so il check for you and tell you if it does say cold damage although i know it does do cold damage. I dont actually think it says on the sword but il get back to you.
|
Hmm last time I checked, which was admittedly a long time ago, it mentioned the cold damage.

Long Sword +2: 'Varscona' Blades of this type were long used by Sharran priests during the sacrificial rites of "Feast of the Moon" ceremonies. Legends say that, when she passed on, the remains of this sword's wielder were mummified and the blade was placed within her chest as a symbol of power. In the first stage of a long forgotten ritual, she was to have been exhumed in a season, born again in some new form. Unfortunately, cult wars killed the few that knew of her existence; her tomb became a prison where she was forgotten, and there she developed a rage that bordered on insanity. Her grave was eventually found, but it was deserted and gave no indication of her whereabouts. Some venture to say that her anger was so concentrated, she became one with the very blade of her weapon. Regardless, after hundreds of years surrounded by constant hate, the sword harvested a power of its own. It is now exceedingly deadly in combat. STATISTICS: Damage: 1D8 +2 Special: +1 Cold damage THACO: +2 bonus Damage type: slashing Weight: 3 Speed Factor: 3 Proficiency Type: Long Sword Type: 1-handed Requires: 6 Strength Not Usable By: Druid Cleric Mage </font> |
Thanks everybody. As you may take from my post I already suspected this result. But after all your quick and firm answers I was really in doubt and had to look at the sword's description again. The answer is as simple as it is annoying: I am playing the German version and they messed things up in the translation. They simply left out the line about the additional cold damage.
Don't get me wrong: I am usually very pleased with the translation work in the BG series. It is very well done and tries hard to save most of the atmosphere, the humour and the interaction. There are many other crappy examples out there in the world of PC gaming (I remember the release of CIV II (years ago) with horror). BTW, when speaking of translations: The Friendly ARMS Inn! Am I right that the word arms does not mean the human extremities (as translated in the German version, ha, ha), but the coat of ARMS? |
It's actually the friendly ARM inn in the english version, meaning something like friendly weaponry. That is connected to the neutralness of the keep.

Yeah, its the Friendly Arm Inn. Here's another extreme horrific translation: Black & White for the Netherlands! UUURRGGGHHH!!!! </font> [ 10-13-2003, 11:05 AM: Message edited by: Zuvio ] |
