Well, in Helm's Hold I released the demon and he gave me some cloak. I (unfortunately) save the game right then. I then did a little more exploring, and found the book of helm, meant to revive the guardian spirit thing. I went back to the altar, but I could not use the helm book because I had released the demon! What would I have gotten if I had banished the demon and if I revived the guardian spirit?

Either an elemental resistances ring, a really nice bow, information, or magical aid from the guardian.

Ohhh, I really needed a bow, and sold that cloak as soon as I got it anyway... :(

There's also aligment hits. Releasing the demon is evil, restoring the guardian is good. Oddly, releasing the demon does not affect later parts of the game at all (You'd think a rampaging demon might be noticed...).

well as an evil worshipper of dark gods and demons and the like i freed the demon in the name of 'realism' so i dont know but im sure he gave me some dragon slippers and no cloak...and a double headed axe...is this stuff erm ,whats that word, randomly generated?

The ring given by the guardian is always the same, so I assumed the rest of the items are the same also. I remember being offered a cloak the one time I released him.

Both the demon and the guardian gives you a choice of rewards - (they have all been mentioned by now)
