If I start as a fighter and take 1 druid level. My animal companion will not get better right? Because I'll advance level for my fighter class. right?

Yes, that is correct. I have an imp for a sorceror familiar, and he is stuck at 3 hp, whereas my Ranger familiar has gained hp/abilities.

Edit: Forgot to say that I have 1 level of Sorceror, but 9 levels of Ranger
