if you take an elven mage you get free proficiency in long sword, and Rapier, you can also pick up weapon proficiency (martial, or exotic) and get all the weapons that fall into those classifications, like long sword, broad sword, scimitar, etc for martial, exotic gives you bastard sword, katana, greatsword (altho this might be martial...) double sword, etc.

elves have a number of other feats that are useful (their spot/search ability is always on, bonus feats, etc.

If you really want to wield a sword, go ahead and do so. I wouldn't recommend getting into melee range though. You won't last very long. There's nothing wrong with creating several different characters. That way, you can experience all that the game has to offer.

take a level of Fighter (gives you plenty of weapons/armour proficiencies) or take Martial Weapons proficiency

Nothing wrong with that thinking. Wait until you have a +1 on the "to hit" ability (before modifiers) then select EXOTIC weapons.

You'll be able to use those COOL two-bladed swords AND since they're LIGHT in WEIGHT (4.4 lbs) yet LARGE (weapon) you'll be able use your DISARM to SAVE YOUR BUTT because you DON'T belong in a melee...

(Though I took TWO levels of fighter and the "Still" feat. I'm probably the only full-plate armour mage in the game...).

hmm, well if your going to be a figher/mage, try to get a light armor since platemail has a big spell failure percentage... i would prefer stoneskin... its better ...
