hello, i'm new and just had a question about multiclassing. i want to multiclass an elven ranger with a rogue but i'm hearing about experience point penalties of 20%. will i get this penalty if i multiclass a ranger at level 4 and a new class of a rogue which is at level 1? can someone please explain this penalty thing and give me examples. thanks a lot for the help

1st wellcome new member

2nd i can

this is how it works: (made it with examples)

elfen ranger @ level 4 and thief @ level 1: yepp -20%
elfen ranger @ level 4 and thief @ level 3: no penalty
elfen mage @ level 8 and thief @ level 2 and ranger @ level 2: no penalty

u see as long as the classes are at the same level or one of them had one level less there isn't any penalty
u primary class DOESN'T COUNT thats all

Normally if there is more than one level of difference between two of your classes you get the -20% to experience.

The exception to this is a race's favored class. Such a favored race does not count when you check for the -20% penality.

A mage is a favored class of elves. Therefore in Meriadoc's third example there are no penalities.

In your case to avoid the penalities, you will either have to chose Human, Half-Elf or Halfling as a race or try to get ranger and rogue within one level of each other.

Note that a 20% xp penalty is not a huge deal. In the early parts of the game, you'll level really fast. Later on in the game, you'll level slowly. In either case, slowing it down by 20% won't ruin the game.

Yes. You need to keep your highest level within one of your lowest level.

You could chose to be a human or half-elf ranger/rogue, then you wouldn't have this problem.

Even with a -20% experience penalty, you shouldn't have much problem getting a sufficient level to properly advance through the game anyhow.

oh, i see now. thanks for the examples and help guys. i just got back from school. maybe i shouldn't have multiclass the rogue and just hire that tomi guy.

btw, why can't my ranger cast his spells like animal summoning level 1? i had this spell for awhile now and can't cast it.
